Her Story with Aerine Mountain: Starting Something Completely New Even When It's Scary
Have you ever dreamed of doing something completely different than what you’re doing now? But then always stop yourself, thinking it doesn’t make sense because you’ve already put so much time into this other thing you’ve been doing and it’s just too late in the game for you to completely start over?
If that resonates with you in the slightest, you’re going to be excited to read this interview with Aerine Mountain. She recently made some big changes, leaving behind a 5 year career as a salon owner to pursue her passion of holistic health and open a wellness center with her husband.
To say she got some questions is an understatement, but in her story below she talks about how the feeling of respecting her wants and needs, even though its the scariest thing she’s ever done, “is a pretty damn good feeling.”
I love this so much because life really is so short, so we might as well give our big dreams a chance , whether we’ve had them forever or have been inspired into a new direction. No matter what happens, we’re going to learn a ton and get to avoid the “what if” regrets.
Meet Aerine! - Fun Facts:
1. I owned a salon for 5 years with two of my best friends.
2. I hiked Patagonia 3 years ago
3. I used to ride BMX when I was in high school
4. I have two fur babies, Brak and Ernest.
5. I love to knit beanies and paint!
Tell us about your business, MountainFit Wellness!
My husband and I founded MountainFit Wellness with the goal of empowering people to live their best lives. We believe that healthy should feel good and that achieving true health is multifaceted yet simple!
WE focus on detoxifying the body and promoting a healthy microbiome first. Following that we optimize lifestyle, taking into consideration : How we eat, how we move, how we handle stress, our sense of community, our sleep and how we immerse ourselves in the natural world.
How did it get it’s start?
It actually started with my husband, James, a physical therapist frustrated with the direction healthcare (arguable "sick-care") is going. There is so much focus being placed on the disease and illness end of the health continuum without a lot of focus on the end that empowers people to thrive and live the lives they deserve.
We both knew that we wanted to do something that would shift the needle in direction that empowered people to live healthier and more fulfilled lives and that's how MountainFit Wellness came to be. The role of optimizing lifestyle has the power to do this. By eating whole foods, mostly plants, by moving, by sleeping well, by managing stress, by being apart of a community and by getting out into our natural world, we all have the power to live our best lives.
What is it like having your husband also your business partner? Any advice for others in the same situation or talking about it with their partner?
Its been surprisingly great. We have been together for 14 now and from the get go we have made a conscious effort to support each others ideas. We understand and appreciate each others strengths and weaknesses which helps us run our business more effectively.
We also know when its time to stop the business talk and clear off our dining room table and have a romantic dinner together. When we get in a mood , we step out and go do something that we personally love to do. James usually hits the trails and goes on crazy long runs. I go to a barre3 class or start on a new painting. For the most part we just have fun!
What are some experiences you went through to get to this point and what did you learn from those?
Being torn down to my core has been a major learning experience for me. As a younger person starting a new business where no one knows who you are or what you're about has been challenging.
I have learned that you have to stay strong and believe in yourself when times are tough. I have had a few occasions where others have talked down about what we are trying to do and not known how to respond.
Now I make it a point to bring up what we do in casual conversations, so we CAN talk about it. I love hearing how people look at us and what we are trying to accomplish. To those that don't agree with me or my practices, that is just fine. Having opinions and different beliefs in life is what makes us all human.
Taking the time to hire people to do jobs you aren't skilled in or don't have the time for is another lesson learned. We work our butts off trying to control all the marketing, all the ordering, update all the research, clean our office, keep the lights on, schedule all our clients, attend presentations and marketing meetings... the list goes on. I have learned that we are not superheros and simply cannot run the show alone. It takes a village.
What's been the best thing about starting over in a new direction?
The feeling of respecting my wants and needs even though its the scariest thing I've ever done. I cannot stand the feeling of being stuck or uninspired in life, there is just not enough time on this earth for that to happen! So just the realization that I wanted to start a new chapter, and did... is a pretty damn good feeling.
Would you be willing to share a business challenge you have you had to overcome going in a new direction? How were you able to overcome that or what are you doing now to overcome that’s working?
Social Media and marketing is not my forte!! I realized I couldn't even take a selfie let alone try and create a Facebook ad that was approved to boost. I am terrible at spelling, so all my posts have to be double checked before posting. I have no idea how to market to anyone besides my already existing friends. Its a mess.
But, luckily we have others who have helped us out with this! We have RevLocal to market our business through Google and help redesign our awesome website, we are working with our friends who are photographers and videographers to create beautiful content for our online presence, we have close friends who helped design our logo and give us advice on hashtags and how to maneuver around Instagram. Lets just say I am getting the hang of it, but still have a long way to go!
What would you say has been the main key so far to helping you get to where you are now in your business?
Relationships! We know so many talented people and they have all been kind enough to participate in one way or another to help our business grow. Any kind of connection you may have with someone could lead to more opportunity to get your name out there.
What are some things you've had to do as a business owner to get "out there" that may have seemed scary at first (or still do!)?
Lunch presentations!! Getting in front of groups of people at doctors offices, local businesses , marketing get together’s... It gives me the sweats. But every time we put ourselves out their and present what we are doing for others, it makes me realize that we do know what we are talking about and a lot of other people agree with what we're putting out there. I have never been a public speaker , but maybe in a year or two I’ll be one.
What are some of your top tips for marketing on social media that have worked for you?
Stay true to who you are. Do not try to dress up your image just to impress others out there. You are enough and if you stay true to who you are and what you want out of your business, people will latch onto that and connect.
What are the investments you've made into yourself over this process to set you up for success?
I became a holistic health coach to further my education so I could give others the best guidance for their life. My husband and I live the life we suggest to others by eating plant based, moving daily in exercise, getting out into nature as much as possible and treating our lives with respect. We have been completely inspired by what we are doing at MountainFit and continue to live.
What advice would you have for someone looking to launch their own business in 2019?
Make sure you have enough money saved up before you begin any process! We have hit many bumps with this one, but still have managed to make it work and stay madly in love.
What are some tools that help make life easier/better for business or for personal development?
Establishing a daily practice of self care. Its easy to get caught up in everything that needs to be done, but understanding that taking the time to love yourself (for me barre3, walking my dogs, getting a good nights sleep, going out with my girls ). If you take care of yourself the rest will fall in line.
What is a book and/or podcast you would recommend for others looking to start or grow their a business or just for general positive mindset motivation?
I love the Rich Roll Podcast! He interviews some of the most influential people from medical doctors to ultra marathon runners. The conversations are mind blowing, I promise you.
What are you looking forward to with your business in 2019?
I am looking forward to hearing more peoples success stories! I personally love when I feel healthier and more in charge of my life and I look forward to sharing that with others.
I am also looking forward to launching our online Plant Based Meal Planner out into the universe for people to grab a hold of and use in their daily lives. If we create a more plant based world, think of all the positive change that can happen. We want to make health easy and affordable for all!
What's the biggest health challenge you see people deal with that you and your team helps with?
Misinformation. There is so much money spent on confusing consumers into buying products or following certain fads. We believe that people deserve honest and simple guidance to maximize the potential they already possess.
