Her Story Spotlight with Kassie Magnusen: Finding Her Passion in Helping Others Become Healthier and Happier

This week I'm so excited to share a "behind the curtain" look at another amazing woman. Our Her Story Spotlight shares her real life struggles as a new mom that we can probably all relate to (guilt, wondering if we're doing it "right", postpartum blues) and how she used exercise and nutrition to be the best version of herself, not only health-wise, but working towards financial goals and fulfilling her passion to help others.

She also challenges us to make sure we're doing something to take care of ourselves as well.

Whether you've set health goals this New Year, parenting goals, financial goals, or maybe have set goals this year around a side business or passion project you want to grow, keep reading because you will get something out of this that will motivate you to either start right or keep going.

Best part of being a mom:
Gosh it’s hard to narrow it down to one thing. Overall, I think the way it’s changed ME is my favorite part. I’m a better person because I’m a mom. It’s hard to explain, but I finally feel like I have real purpose, and I’m a much more understanding and patient person than I used to be.

Most challenging part of being a working mom:
The guilt. I hate that I only see her for a few waking hours each day. And when I’m with her, I feel like we’re just rushing through the motions to make sure everything gets done.

Biggest lesson learned so far:
You are the only “expert” on your child. I used to Google every tiny question or doubt that would come up, and it drove me crazy because there are apparently about 18 million ways to parent and there’s no one right way. So, you really do have to trust your instincts and do what feels best to you. Otherwise, you’ll go insane.

What do you do for fun or to relax outside of mom duties (aka how do you stay sane)?
I work out 5-6 days/week. Working out and being healthy have always helped me deal with stress, and it’s more important now than ever! I used to go to the gym all the time, but now I work out at home to make it fit in mom life.

Day job:
I’m the Senior Director of Account Services for a creative marketing agency in Indianapolis. I lead a team of account executives who manage our clients, which are mostly in the sports industry.

Side hustle:
Online health and fitness coach

How did it get it’s start?
This could be a long story.  I was always into working out and had a pretty healthy lifestyle before I got pregnant. But, I was really sick during my pregnancy and it threw me off course. I gained over 50 pounds. Then once I had my daughter, there just wasn’t any time to get to the gym. In addition to the standard newborn craziness, my daughter was born with hip dysplasia (her hips were dislocated at birth and she had to wear a harness 24/7 for awhile), so everything from nursing to bathing to diaper changes took extra time, plus she didn’t sleep well at all. I became very overwhelmed and depressed. I knew I needed to get back into a workout routine and focus on my nutrition, so I turned to a friend from high school who’s also a coach, and she hooked me up with these home workout programs that took about 30 minutes a day.

Fast forward, I ended up losing 10 pounds in the first month on the programs, and I’m now down to the healthiest weight I’ve been at in my entire adult life. I finally understand proper nutrition and how to give my body the nutrients it needs, rather than focusing on diets and restrictions. I’m so much happier than I’ve been in a very long time, and my life has been completely changed.

I truly want to share these programs with as many moms as I can, because I know the struggle of time and trying to balance it all, but knowing that you NEED to do something for yourself. The side income is also helping us pay off the medical bills and just other debt that we haven’t been able to make headway on for years.

Plans for the future:
I want to grow a team of moms who are looking for something to 1) help them get healthier and 2) help them earn extra money. It’s such an incredible opportunity with a company that I highly respect. I’m earning extra money simply by focusing on my own health and fitness goals, and then sharing that with others. I’m not a fitness or nutrition expert, but I get to offer programs that have been created by the top experts in the industry, and that’s so exciting to me. I’m not sure where this will all go, but I know it’s fulfilling a passion I have to help people get healthier, and specifically help moms find a way to do something for themselves that ultimately benefits their entire family.

What are you looking forward to in 2018?
Moving forward with a real purpose. I enjoy my full-time career, but I’ve been looking for something that would light a fire for me again. I’m so happy that I’ve found that!

Is there anything else you want other women to know?
I run monthly online groups for anyone who wants to get started with one of our programs and meal plan. I share tons of meal prep and planning tips, recipes and just support and motivation to help everyone stay on track. If you’re interested in learning about the programs and different options, just reach out to me!

Also, if you’ve been thinking about taking up a ‘side hustle,’ don’t second guess yourself. I truly believe that network marketing is part of the world we live in and it’s here to stay. Furthermore, even though my husband and I both have good day jobs, paying for all the expenses of today on even two solid incomes is becoming less possible for a lot of people.

Whether its makeup, oils, cleaning products or nutrition/fitness, just make sure it’s something you’re passionate about and that truly relates to who you are and the life you want to live. When it comes to network marketing especially, you have to be able to be authentic, so choose something that fits your passion and go for it!
